Our Favourite Commuter Towns
Moving out of London?
Flexible and remote working, now more than ever, is a realistic option for most office workers. Couples, families and individuals alike are all keen to escape the city with the pull of larger houses and more outdoor space. The majority of those leaving London will still have to factor in commutability, so we looked at our favourite towns with good access to the capital.
Virginia Water, Surrey
Virginia Water is a fantastic location for commuters in northern Surrey within the highly sought after GU25 postcode. The town has a direct train service in under an hour to London Waterloo and excellent road links to the M3, M4 and the M25 as well as easy access to Heathrow and Gatwick for those heading further afield.
Set within a beautiful countryside location with its namesake, the Virginia Water lake, bordering Windsor Great Park. Home to the Wentworth Club Golf and Health Resort you won’t be short of things to do and for families you are within easy reach of world renowned schools like Eton College and St Mary’s Ascot. This quaint town has a thoroughly village feel with easy access to Windsor and Ascot where there are a wealth of shops, restaurants and amenities serving the wider area.
Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire
Chalfont St Giles forms part of a group of villages, The Chalfonts, which also include Chalfont St Peter and Little Chalfont. If you are after a picture perfect setting for your new home, then look no further. This beautiful village has been the backdrop of numerous fictional towns in many TV programmes including; Dad’s Army and The Canterbury Tales.
The Chalfonts are home to a few good pubs, bars and cafes but are only minutes from Seer Green and Gerrards Cross so you won’t have to go far for shopping. The nearest station is also at Gerrards Cross which will get you into Marylebone Station in about 25 minutes, perfect for those needing to regularly commute. Fantastically positioned for the capital but with the chocolate box feel of a quaint English village, you would get the best of both worlds in The Chalfonts.
The small town of Radlett is the second most affluent area outside of London. It is extremely popular with celebrities and you’ll find no shortage of beautiful big houses with spacious country gardens. The town centre also has large Victorian terraced homes too, for those who would prefer to stay within easy reach of the amenities. Radlett Station offers a service direct to St Pancras in under half an hour with other lines connecting to Gatwick and Luton airport stations. Road links are also favourable for commuters giving good access to the M25 and M1.
Watling Street is the main shopping street running through Radlett with a wide variety of chain stores, independent boutiques, bars and restaurants. The town boasts 12 primary and infant schools and there are a number of good independent secondary schools in the surrounding area. You won’t be short of things to do on your day off either, Radlett is home to its own Rugby, Tennis, Cricket and Football clubs!
